English (2MQF)

More than any other subject, English – and especially reading – gives pupils access to the rest of the curriculum and is fundamental to their educational success.

This is why the introduction to the national curriculum says: ‘Fluency in the English language is an essential foundation for success in all subjects’.

But English is so much more than the gateway to success in other curriculum subjects. Through studying literature, pupils’ eyes are opened to the human experience; they explore meaning and ambiguity as well as the beauty and power of language. English also has a strong creative and expressive dimension.” Ofsted Curriculum Review Series: English (2022)

The English training curriculum is designed to support you to deliver high quality teaching in any school context. It provides you with the best available evidence as well as practical support as you begin to develop your skills as an English specialist.

The curriculum is designed to extend your interest, knowledge and confidence in English as a subject within the curriculum and to extend your development of an analytical and critical attitude towards the teaching and learning of English.

In order to become an effective classroom teacher, trainees must be able to critically and realistically evaluate their own work, listen to the advice of others, and ensure progress through continuous reflection. The development of these skills runs through the entire course.
