FAQs
What qualifications will I study for?
All our trainees study for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and have the opportunity to gain PGCE through our university partner. Find out more here.
What age range will I be prepared to teach?
Training for secondary trainees takes place across the 11-16 age range.
How much are tuition fees for the course and can I get help with funding?
The tuition fee for all our Secondary Teacher Training courses is £9,250.
Funding is available to help you train to teach. You can apply for a:
- tuition fee loan of up to £9,250 to cover your teacher training, so you do not need to pay course fees upfront
- maintenance loan of up to £12,667 to help with living costs
You can still apply for a tuition fee and a maintenance loan if you already have a student loan, and regardless of whether you get a teaching bursary or scholarship.
You will only have to make loan repayments once you’re earning. Your repayments will not increase if you already have a student loan and take an additional loan for teacher training.
How much will I be teaching?
We have a carefully structured course programme in place designed to enable trainees to steadily build up their teaching. Trainees should, in most cases, be teaching approximately 30% of a full timetable by the end of the Autumn term, progressively building up to teaching 80% of a full timetable by the end of the programme.
Will I have to travel to another school or to the SCITT training base?
All trainees complete two placements over the year and will be required to travel to these in order to ensure they experience contrasting settings. With access to over 20 schools across Greater Manchester and West Yorkshire, we aim to limit your travel time to a maximum of 90 minutes. Trainees will also need to travel to the SCITT training base (in Greater Manchester|) or another venue for taught subject sessions.
How do I get school experience?
Although it is not essential, school experience is valuable and we recommend that you approach several local schools in plenty of time; they get a lot of such requests so please don’t leave it too late. However, if you are struggling to find a place, do let us know and we will put you in touch with a partner school that, subject to a DBS check, should be able to help you.
Can I complete a PGCE on this route?
Yes, all our courses include the option to complete PGCE study alongside QTS.
